Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde: The Nollywood Legend Steps Behind the Camera

Some names, on the lips of an entire continent, simply speak for themselves. Omotola. One name is enough. For thirty years, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has been more than a Nigerian actress: she is a living institution, a postcard of the greatest, most tenacious, most radiant things Africa can produce. And in 2026, the icon crowns this golden chapter with a new kind of daring: stepping behind the camera for her very first film as a director, Mother’s Love. The gesture of a woman who refuses to stop at the top.

From Childhood Tragedy to the World Stage

Born on 7 February 1978 in Lagos, the eldest child of a stable and loving family, Omotola Jalade grew up between Lagos and Kaduna, until the day her father died when she was just twelve. That early, brutal loss became the silent engine of a boundless ambition. She had to provide for her family. She had to find a way out.

Chance, or destiny, led her to Nollywood. At seventeen, fresh out of secondary school, she seized an opportunity that fate offered her as an escape from poverty, and took her first steps in Nigerian cinema in 1995. No one then grasped what was beginning. Not even she did.

300 Films. One Legend. One Woman.

Since her teenage debut in the mid-1990s, Omotola has risen to legendary status, appearing in more than 300 films, breaking barriers on pay equity and becoming one of the first Nigerian actresses to achieve global recognition.

In 2013, TIME Magazine named her among the 100 most influential people in the world, an accolade that definitively propelled Omosexy, as her fans affectionately call her, to the rank of Africa’s cultural ambassador. That same year, she spoke briefly at the WISE Summit in Doha. The following year, the Nigerian government honoured her as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). She is also the second Nigerian, and the first Nigerian celebrity, to pass one million “likes” on her Facebook page. At a time when social media was rewriting the rules of fame, Omotola was a step ahead.

Integrity as a Way of Life

Omotola’s greatness is not measured by her trophies alone. It is measured by what she has turned down. In a recent appearance on The Afropolitan Show, she said candidly that she could have become a billionaire, but that some of those opportunities required compromising values she considers fundamental. She chose credibility. She chose integrity. And it is precisely that choice that explains why, thirty years after her debut, her name still commands respect.

Mother’s Love: A Director Is Born

2026 is the year of transition. After three decades in front of the camera, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde makes her feature directorial debut with Mother’s Love, a 102-minute drama-thriller produced under her RedHotConcepts label and distributed by The Nile Group, which explores themes of motherhood, sacrifice, resilience and survival.

Inspired by true events, the film follows Adebisi, a young woman from a wealthy, sheltered background whose life is turned upside down during her year of National Youth Service (NYSC). To play this central role, Omotola cast her own daughter, Meraiah Ekeinde, in her screen debut. An intimate gesture that turns the film into a passing of the torch between generations.

The film’s international journey is striking. From the Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF) to the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), by way of Dubai and the Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) in Los Angeles, Mother’s Love travelled the greatest stages of world cinema before arriving in Nigerian cinemas on 6 March 2026. At SVAFF in June 2025, Omotola was already awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the Debut Director category.

A Film Given to the Nation

But what definitively sets Mother’s Love apart from any other project is the decision announced on 13 March 2026: all of RedHotConcepts’ box-office takings from the Nigerian release will go to Slum2School Africa, an NGO dedicated to access to education and scholarships for children from disadvantaged communities. A first in the history of African cinema.

The announcement was made at a private screening organised within 48 hours at EbonyLife Cinemas in Lagos, attended by more than 200 people, including government officials, civil society representatives and around fifty members of the Makoko community.

The words Omotola chose that evening sum up everything she is: “Tonight, Mother’s Love becomes more than a film. It becomes a bridge between storytelling and social transformation.”

The Premiere of a New Era

The Nigerian premiere, held on 1 March 2026 at the Alliance Française in Ikoyi, Lagos, with an “Old Money Glam” theme, brought together the cream of Nollywood: Sola Sobowale, Rita Dominic, Stephanie Okereke Linus, Bimbo Akintola as well as former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who described Omotola as a “national treasure”.

That evening, on that red carpet, a 48-year-old woman was celebrating thirty years of cinema, thirty years of marriage to Captain Matthew Ekeinde, and the birth of a new career all at once. Not the end of a journey. The start of another chapter.

Omotola does not rest on her laurels. She plants them in the earth, so that others may gather them.
